WHAT WE DO

Community Wellness

Wellness and healthy living - physically and mentally - are the heart of the HUB. Given that all of this work began when the area became a food desert, the Collaborative has placed an emphasis on wellness through whole-person medicine, with concentrations around food access and security, building up trust in medicine, and physicall activity.

At the heart of the HUB for Community Innovation is an intersection between good medicine, healthy eating, literacy, and the idea of taking care of a multitude of challenges simultaneously. The healthcare practitioners at the Harrisburg Health Clinic work directly with local farmers and the Augusta Locally Grown Food Farmacy, writing "social" scripts for medicines that aren't necessarily a pill. And through the Paulette Harris Literacy Center at Augusta University and RISE Augusta, the HUB is able to help patients and their inner circles navigate the complexities of insurance and access.

The HUB is also a key partner with the Medical College of Georgia's Department of Family & Community Medicine, leveraging the university's access to clinical and research programming on a large scale to address even the most challenging of wellness issues. This is no better illustrated than through the HUB/MCG/NIH partnership to Build Up Trust between wellness and the communities who need it most. And if you are looking to get in good shape while helping with the fight against cancer, Paceline is a wonderful year-long movement that raises funds for cancer research that concentrates funding on those cancers that affect the nearby communities.

If you are a resident of the Harrisburg or surrounding neighborhoods, we encourage you to reach out to the HUB or its partners to learn more about programming built around and for you.

WELLNESS AND HEALTH

During the Augusta Choice Neighborhoods assessment process, the team learned that the leading causes of death in Augusta are heart disease and cancer - two conditions which can be substantially mitigated by early recognition and proactive treatment. However, according to the Choice Neighborhood survey of neighborhood residents, over 40% of all adults and 28.8% of children do not have health insurance.

The HUB Augusta Collaborative along with partners at the HUB for Community Innovation are actively partnering with local institutions, including the Medical College of Georgia, the Augusta University Schools of Public Health, and Allied Health, and Piedmont Augusta. If you would like to know more about these programs, please click a link (below) or call the HUB at 706-926-0557 (or email us at info@hubaugusta.org).
