AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The Dr. Paulette P. Harris Literacy Center at Augusta University was presented with a $20,000 check for winning the Georgia Reads Community Reads award for 2026.
Former NFL player and Super Bowl winner Malcolm Mitchell is the Georgia Reads Coach, and presented the award on Tuesday.
“Raise your hand if you would like to go to jail. No one puts their hand in the air. Raise your hand if you want a decrease in life expectancy. No one puts their hand in the air, so if they don’t want those outcomes, then they must want the opposite,” said Mitchell. “To be self-sufficient. To be empowered. To have decision making skills and abilities on their own. So the goal is to help people understand how reading plays a role and getting that outcome.”
The literacy center also provides free tutoring to all ages, The money they got today will help them reach more people.
